Helping the City of Tshwane Rise to the WWF Earth Hour City Challenge

Increased awareness and use of public transport is the first step to sustainable cities. When the City of Tshwane wanted to host a race across public transport for the WWF Earth Hour City Challenge, they turned to WhereIsMyTransport to power sustainable journey information, and showcase what the current system is capable of.

The WWF Earth Hour City Challenge is a global competition that challenges cities to do more than turn out their lights for Earth Hour. In 2015, The City of Tshwane took up the challenge to bring awareness and increase sustainability in the city.

To raise awareness of the public transport infrastructure and help commuters make more thoughtful choices, the City and the WWF hosted a race across the city on public transport, where the winners would win not by arriving first, but by emitting the least amount of carbon.

However, the city had no mechanism to reasonably and fairly approximate such a score. With only two weeks to go, they called on WhereIsMyTransport to add emissions data to the public transport modes included in our platform. The Findmyway app for Windows, Android, and Apple platforms were re-skinned for the Challenge, and the ability to log calculated carbon emissions enabled the City to host a high-profile event with the WWF.

Findmyway showcases the benefits and value of the WhereIsMyTransport platform, by making integrated transport information accessible and tangible for users. With the Earth Hour City Challenge, the apps also demonstrated the power of technology to empower citizens and cities to reach their sustainability goals. As a WWF African Climate Solver, Findmyway was estimated to reduce emissions in emerging economies by 28 million tonnes in 2025.
